Newsletter, Sept. 9-12

Dear Studio Blue children and parents:
We were busy this week!

Firefighters and Police Officers: Can everybody play?

When you played on the car, sometimes something broke, like the engine or the tires, and you used sticks to use as tools to fix the car. When there was a fire you jumped off the car and grabbed hoses (sticks) and buckets to put out the fires. Some people were the police. Sometimes the car was a firetruck and sometimes it was a police car. Sometimes we had disagreements. Will and Arlo disagreed: Can they both be police officers? After talking about it with Mark, they decided they could. Sometimes we disagreed about who could be a firefighter: Could Ferdinand join Kairan and William to be a firefighter too (on Wednesday)? We stopped and talked about it. We figured out that it was okay for Ferdinand to be a firefighter, too. On Thursday it seemed that anyone who wanted to could be a firefighter.

This week’s firefighters and police officers: Kairan, Camden, William, Dax, Ferdinand, Arlo, Will, Jemima, Augie

Envelopes: How do you make an envelope?

Arlo, you worked with crayons on paper and then brought it over to show us. I made an envelope, you said. You told us that envelopes are like papers.

William, you also made an envelope on another day. Later, you said that envelopes are to put cards in. When we shared this with everybody at meeting time, Cassie, you added that envelopes are white and they look like paper. When we came back inside after snack, William, you must have still been thinking about envelopes because you went to work at that table again. You held three pieces of paper together with your hands and said, this is what envelopes look like.

Jemima sat at the table with you while you were working with paper to make envelopes. Jemima, you held your arms out to your sides showing us that you wanted your envelope to be so big, this big!

When Vivian sat at the play dough nearby, William, you told her, We’re trying to think of envelopes.

You have some more ideas about envelopes that we are going to share with the others in Studio Blue next week.

Ramp Area: Can you do what I do?

Camden: Look! I'm going backwards!
Llewyn tries this too.
Dax: Going backwards!
Alice tries lying down across the ramp.
Jemima tries this, but on her belly.
The girls try moving across the ramp together.
Augie and Kairan run across.
Augie wonders where Kairan has gone...
Augie joins Kairan and Jemima in the cube!

Houses and Buildings

Sometimes houses are for birds, sometimes houses are for cars, and sometimes you build to see how blocks balance and slide. Here are some buildings we noticed.

This week’s builders: Alice, Augie, Camden, Cassie, Ferdinand, Kairan, Llewyn, Vivian, Will, William

Flashlights – What happens when you shine a flashlight into a hole?

And how do you make your flashlight beam bigger and smaller?

(Cassie, Ferdinand and Jemima were exploring this on Thursday with Mark)

Fondly,
Diane and Mark
