Dear Studio Blue,
We have so many stories about your play to share!

“Now we can play!”
How do you make a stick or a cone stand up in the sand?

Kairan, a couple of weeks ago, you wanted to lean a pipe against this metal frame so that you could send sand down it, but the pipe wasn’t tall enough. What could go underneath the pipe to make it taller? A cone! You filled a cone with sand, and put the pipe on top. But the cone fell over. How to make it stand up? You, Ferdinand, and William put sand around the cone to hold it up. When it stayed up, you put the pipe in and said, Now we can play! and you and Alice and Arlo and William poured sand down the pipe.

On the playground, Ferdinand, you wanted to make your sticks stand up by putting sand all around then, just like Kairan had made the cone stand up. You and Mark worked together to pack sand around the sticks. Dax and Vivian, you came by and tried it with your own sticks – it worked! We can make cones and sticks stand up in the sand… Could we use the sand to make other things stand up?

Cassie, you like making things stand up, too, but you do it in other ways. It looks like William liked your idea.

Even more about pipes!   When does a pipe turn into a ramp?

Everybody likes pouring sand down pipes on the playground, so we put pipes into the sand table in the classroom. Holes are interesting, too, so we added holes to the sand table. Here are some pictures of how you used it.

Dax, sometimes you set up a pipe like a ramp. Augie, Ferdinand, Vivian and Kairan, you all saw Dax do this and you helped him send sand, gravel, wood chips, and pine cones down the pipe.

Arlo, you and Dax were pushing the pipes across the playground. What were you up to?

Standing, sitting, lying down on Curvy Boards.

And finally, FOOD!

Where do you keep ice cream at home?

Fondly,
Diane and Mark
