“Screens” artists Studio Yellow

As we listened to the children’s language around Penelope Umbrico’s piece (Out of Order: Bad Display,) we noticed a great interest around color, form and shape. This inspired the introduction of a variety of new explorations in the studio. Initially focusing on color and shape, children blended paint in plastic bags to create a similarly layered look to what we viewed in the Linde Gallery. During the process, children shared with each other their individual techniques.

Look, I’m kind of making gray. Parker
I’m making light blue. Violet
How do you do that? Avery
Squish it. Addie
I roll it and scrunch it at the same time. Violet
Look I can roll it. Alex
I made green. Parker
What colors made green?
Blue and yellow. Parker
I squish it and I double it and I roll it. Addie

Building off the interest in this piece, clear plexiglass sheets were added to the studio.  Would children mimic the layered arrangement of the museum artwork or would they take a completely different approach?

While initially children mirrored the museum piece, eventually their work expanded into three dimensional structures. Once again their passion for building continues to drive our curriculum.
