Learning through play

The foundation of the philosophy at Lincoln Nursery School is the importance of play, the means by which children explore and question their ideas and thinking.   During each and everyday within the studio children are unwittingly learning together through their play.

Oftentimes when the children are faced with a problem they utilize different approaches to attempt to find a solution.  They look to their friends to draw on their ideas and knowledge as well as using trial and error to test these ideas alongside each other.

Parker – Let  me show you what a D looks like. Violet
Parker copies Violet’s demonstrated D.  However he writes over some scotch tape and erases part of the D with his sleeve.
Look Violet!  Now it looks like a P. Parker
I have a P in my name.  I’m showing you how to write my name. Parker
I’m now showing you how to write my name. Violet

As Violet writes Parker pays close attention and names the letters.

I know how to wrap presents but sometimes I forget. Violet

I think she needs some help. Julia

Yeah, can you just hold it? I don’t need help, I can tape it. Violet

I have made a tape station. Elliott

Elliott and Tait work together.  Tait is pulling and holding long strips of tape taut so Elliott can cut.

Parker demonstrates to Sofia where to place tape to stop the box top lifting.

You need longer pieces to stick it down. Parker to Charlotte
It’s lifting. Sofia
Here I can tape it. Parker
Parker, I can help you.  I’ll hold this.  See, if you do this – it sticks down on the box. Addie
