Gathering

Over these first days of Studio Red, adults and children have been gathering together. In large groups and small, we have been deep in conversation and observation of one another. In this way we are learning about our community and our roles within it.

Our caterpillars have certainly been a catalyst for such gathering! Here we share a video provocation we invited the children to watch, along with the thinking they gathered around what they saw — noting details and changes.

Through observation, we learn.  Through observation, we ask questions.

Children observe the life cycle from egg to butterfly and generate a list of words and phrases describing their observations: “moving” “faces” “two things sticking up.” Then each child chooses a word card and creates a representational drawing on the back. During music & movement, the children interpret the movements on the cards.
