Rules About Cake

      Ada

Little Batwing is sleeping right now. We’re making a new playroom for her! But she can’t see it yet, she can’t even peek! No peeking Batwing!  No no no!

After some squeaking and crying sounds, Ada comforts Batwing and puts her back to sleep.

Ada has been talking about the reconstruction work taking place at her house. It’s exciting, noisy and  even required spending some nights at her Grandma’s house.

Ada   Little Batwing is going to be SO excited when she sees her new playroom!  Hurry before she wakes up!

Maddy  I’m going to make a slip and slide.     Maddy lines up the large square magna-tiles. Then she uses triangular pieces to makes several pizzas to surprise Little Batwing. After lining up the pizzas on the slip and slide, Maddy stacks them on top of each other and announces, It is now a birthday cake!  Intrigued, Margot comes over to work with Maddy on the cake making. Margot announces I want to make a pattern. Maddy replies I want to make it pizza shape. After some listening and negotiating the cake is completed!

Margot  It’s a surprise, right?

Maddy  Yes, no eating cake!

Margot  I’m going to draw a piece of cake and cross it out. Tomorrow is the day of the birthday. We will be super busy. On your birthday you can eat cake. That’s why Little Batwing kept trying to eat her cake.

Ada We need to make rules about cake! These are some rules. Look at my rules! I will put my rules down. Ada concentrates on making horizontal swirling writing on her paper.

Maddy Ok I’ll draw a piece of cake, orange cake, then I’m going to draw somebody eating it. Do you know how to draw Little Batwing? Unsure, Maddy makes another choice. I’m going to cross it out. It’s going to mean NO EATING CAKE!  I’m going to write you CAN have carrots, but you CAN”T have cake. See I crossed it out. No cake!

Margot    I’m going to make an egg. You can eat an egg, but no cake. An egg is healthy.

Maddy On the other side I’m going to see what drinks she can have, no sweet drinks. She can’t even have apple juice. Juice NO, but milk YES. I’m drawing a juice box with a straw and then I’m crossing it off.

I am writing down rules about cake. There! The rules are made! Ada places her signs outside Little Batwings home as well as next to the birthday cake.

A dilemma!

Maddy I’m just gonna make, umm, well unicorn can’t read, but she’s not a bad one, she’s very nice, but she can’t read so she won’t understand my sign.

Margot offers a solution. Maybe you can draw pictures.

Maddy But she knows what pictures mean!

Ada But I put some rules for Little Batwing down so that she can see them.

Maddy Well, you know, babies can’t talk so they can’t read. They can’t understand talking or reading.

Margot Yeah, especially a baby who can’t even talk, like gagagoogoo. They’ll think like rararara.

Ada Waawawa Little Batwing is awake! She heard about her cake! It’s really time for cake!
