Pancake Jake

by Steven Traugh    He wrote this chant as an exercise for teaching the vowel sound of the long “a.” There is a motion for each line, but I just don’t have it in me to list them all here, though I will tell you that the sign for Pancake Jake is drawing a J in the air.

Eighty-eight pancakes,
Piled on a plate,
For a crazy snake,
Named Pancake Jake.

Jake started at the top,
Of all eighty-eight;
Then slid down the stack,
With his mouth agape —

‘Til his tail was in the air,
And his face was on the plate;
Then he did a pancake shake,
Fell and made a pancake quake.

As he slowly crawled away,
Jake was heard to say,
“From my head to my tail,
I’m just one long tummy ache.”
