If I Knew You Were Coming

My modification of an old jazzy tune from way back. Pictures in my book guide the children through this. The first page shows the letter “M” — I ask what letter it is and what sound it makes. The next page shows “mmmmmm,” and we all say that together and I explain that that’s what we say when we think about cake as we rub our tummies. Then I teach them the song:

If I knew you were coming I’d have baked a cake,      rub tummy, “mmmm”
baked a cake, baked a cake.
If I knew you were coming I’d have baked a cake,
How-dya-do? How-dya-do? How-dya-do?                   wave!

Same idea on next verses:
If I’d baked a cake I would have lit some candles        put up fingers & wiggle for candles

If I lit some candles I’d have blown them out              blow fingers, make them go down

If I’d blown them out I would have made a wish
close eyes, fists over head, pop out fingers, & say “ding!”
(with one class we started to say “uh oh!” here once they knew what was coming)

I would have wished for another cake                           rub tummy, “mmm”

If I ate another cake I’d have a tummy ache                hold stomach and groan
