Studio Red: daily do & draw 4/28

Dear Studio Red,

The environment is the space around you.  It can be inside or outside.  Today we invite you to zoom into the environment of your home.  We invite you to zoom into one room.

do & draw

DO

Today we will create a tiny three-dimensional room with a piece of paper.  It is important that the paper is a square to do this work.  Watch the video to learn how to turn a rectangular piece of paper into a square. Then follow the steps below to fold and pop up your room!

What shapes do you see as you fold your paper?

A note to parents:

It is okay to create the square piece of paper for your child.  If working together on the folding and cutting, say the steps aloud as you work.  You can even have your child check your efforts as you go along!  So much math is happening during this work, discover shapes as you fold and unfold your paper, name them with your child.  Find the center or the middle of the paper.  Count the shapes, the edges or the steps!

DRAW

Which room in your home will you create?

Grab some marking tools, for now it is time to add life to your room!  You will have to open up your pop up and work flat to add details to your environment.  Remember, the cut edge becomes the floor and the uncut surface becomes the walls.

A note to parents:

Extend this work by creating many rooms!  Bring in characters, Lego, Playmobile, or animal figures—or draw your own!  Add furniture with small blocks or boxes.  Tell stories about what happens in the rooms!

On the right we have shared the video we presented with the children during yesterday’s gathering.  Perhaps you would like to share it with your child for the first time, or rewatch it together.  While we have often shared ideas, we used this video as a provocation for questions.  How many questions can you ask as you watch?
