“Yeah, that’s a pattern!”

Curiosity is emerging about patterns.  While reading from our chapter book, My Father’s Dragon it was noted that the title of sequencing chapters followed a “pattern”.

“That’s My Father meets a…My Father Meets a…My Father meets a…” -Nico

Again, gathered together for meeting a discussion around patterns bubbled up.

“I know what they are!  It’s like Astronaut, now, now.” -Eleanor
“Or girl, girl, girl, boy, boy, boy.” -Margot
“Even it’s pig, lamb, pig, lamb.” -Margot
“If you just look at the thing it’s on then there’s gonna be a thing on the other side and the one after you go after.  So you have to see the one after the first.  It’s like pinecone, sled, pinecone and the next one would be sled because it did sled before.” -Nico

Following this meeting, play among some children brought back thinking about patterns.

“Let’s see…(building a tower and noticing a pattern).” -Margot
“That’s not a pattern.  If it were green, blue, green, blue, it’ll be a pattern.” -Quinn
“Well, this can also be a pattern…green, blue, yellow, red.” -Margot
“Yeah, that’s a pattern!” -Quinn
“Yeah!” -Nico

As we turn our attention to the children’s thinking around patterns, we wonder how else we might see them exploring patterns.

I notice that your circles seem to follow the same pattern as the circles on the game board.

“Yeah!  It’s circle, circle, circle. Circle, circle, circle.” -Nico
