Unicorn Song

by Shel Silverstein  There’s a lot more to this song, but this is as much as I do.

A long time ago, when the Earth was green
There were more kinds of animals than you’ve ever seen
They’d run around free while the Earth was being born
And the loveliest of all was the unicorn

There were green alligators                 open & close arms like alligator jaws
and long-necked geese                         one arm crooked in front w/hand as beak
Some humpty-backed camels            hands on shoulders, elbows to sides
and some chimpanzees                         flip arms: hands scratch armpits
Some cats and                                         hands for ears
rats and                                                      fingers slide across upper lip (whiskers)
elephants,                                                 hand/arm swoop down & up for trunk
but sure as you’re born                        “cradle” pretend baby in arms
The loveliest of all was the unicorn     one finger makes horn, the other makes tail
