Designing a Spring Day Together!

Good morning everyone! It’s Springtime now! Some days are chilly, even snowy, some days are warm, and you may be noticing some tiny buds in your neighborhood, and maybe even some fully bloomed flowers. I am going to read this story about spring. I hope you like it!                                         Kjerstin

We read  “Weaving The Rainbow” at Extended Day. It is about something else that happens in the Spring! Spring is sheep shearing time. The sheeps’ long wool coats have kept them warm throughout the winter, but now it’s time for a haircut. Except, sheep do not have hair like we do, so they have a wool cut.

After shearing the sheep, they clean it with  soapy water, and comb out the sticks and burrs and then they dye the wool roving beautiful colors of the rainbow.

We decided that we would experiment with wool too! With colors of the rainbow we made felted flowers. The children choose different colors, and stuffed the roving into cookie cutters. The next step was to pour warm water over the wool, add some lavender soap and mush and squish for 5, 6,7…8 minutes until the fibers stuck together and the roving became felt.

After rinsing the soap out with warm water, we needed to wait for our flowers to dry. Here they are!

What else do our flowers need to make a Spring day?  Do the flowers need any other parts to grow in the dirt? Do you have other ideas of what else may come out of the brown, brown ground? Are you noticing any animals or sounds? Maybe you can look at what is growing in your yard or woods, or you can close your eyes and imagine a warm spring day. Can you make a collage like Karen does below?  We would love to hear your ideas and see your pictures. Please send them to ExtendedDay@lincolnnurseryschool.org and we will show them on our blog.
