Studio Red: daily do & draw 5/15

Dear Studio Red,

Today’s invitation to create is inspired by a conversation that Emily and Ruthie had together. They imagined what we would look like if our body parts were in places different than we know. We hope that this work creates some smiles and giggles!

do & draw

DO

How can folded paper help us think in parts?

To begin our play, you will need a rectangular piece of paper.  You can choose any size piece of paper, but know that you will be drawing on it and know that you will be creating smaller spaces to draw within.  Spaces too small might be tricky and spaces too big might feel overwhelming.  Find a piece just right for you!

DRAW

How will parts come together to create new creature?

In the video below you are invited to draw along with Lauri.  The video runs for about fifteen minutes, so please feel free to stop it and work on your own when you feel comfortable.

Grab your favorite marking tools, your folded paper and let’s draw!

Can you find the creature combinations in this familiar deCordova sculpture?

A note to parents:

This is a game that came to be known as Exquisite Corpses.  It originated in the early 1900s and was played by many.  Often the paper was passed between people.  One person created the head.  The paper was then folded under so that the next artist could not see the image drawn.  The paper would continue to move in this way until all parts were filled and then the creature would be revealed!  As this might be a lot for one person to draw on their own, it could be an opportunity to play as a family!

Below is a story that invites us wonder even more.

The title of the story is If...
