Studio Red: daily do & draw 5/12

Dear Studio Red,

Today we invite you to move slowly.  Settle in a space and watch.  Find a favorite tree to lean against or a rock to sit upon.  If you walk, walk with care and observe the world below your feet.  Carefully lift a log in the woods.  Look closely and then gently reposition the log.  Observe the world of tiny creatures.

DO

Like the trees and the flowers that are starting to bloom, so are the tiny creatures of the earth starting to appear.  Caroline has been finding tadpoles in the ponds, Kieran has found an inchworm on a fuzzy leaf, and Case was surprised to find a spider hiding in a picked daffodil!

Where were these creatures during the winter?  How do you know where to look for these creatures?

What tiny creature will you discover and observe?

DRAW

How will you draw a home for your creature?

Now that you have observed your tiny creature, we invite you to draw its tiny home.  This home can be drawn from your observation,  completely from your imagination or a combination of both!

A bug world as imagined by Carson Ellis.

 Note to parents:

If your child is not up for drawing right now, just take some time together and consider Carson Ellis’s illustration.  While it is imaginary, it is based on reality too.  What can you find that is real?  What is fantasy?

Have your child imagine their creature’s world aloud while you try to draw it.  They will be organizing their thoughts and helping you to see what they are picturing in their mind.  Or you can share the pen and create a world together—one of you start and the other adds.  Continue passing it back and forth and see what emerges!
