Reading Tools

We have found the concept of tools to be a wonderful way to engage children in their own learning processes. Tools of the mind, tools of the body, and tools of the physical world are what help us to venture into the new and unknown. With tools, we work through challenges and solve problems.

“We only think when confronted with a problem.” - John Dewey

In Studio Red, both preschoolers and kindergarteners have been making meaning of written language.  As they encounter the unknown, they discover tools of their own.  As teachers, we name these strategies and introduce children to others we know.

What does this say? What tools do I know that can help me figure it out?

In our library you will find a collection of images that represent the reading tools we are introducing to those tackling these challenges!

Look at the first letter.

Tap each sound.

Look at the picture for a clue.

Point to each word.

Think about the words you know from your memory.

"Hey, I know another tool we know! Remember the word and that's how you know to read it!"
