Children want to write. Donald H. Graves

This year we have been witnessing the beauty of the evolution of writing. This process starts with a mindset, with children believing they can write and that they are writers.

Initially children's writing might not match our own perception. But children know that what they are doing is different from the marks they have made before. These marks have a different purpose and motivation, they are meant to be read.

Within the context of their play, we see the children's writing morph between scribbles and convention. The purpose of the work drives the means of communication.

Over time, the hand and the mind become more automatic. Sound identification and letter recognition, letter formation and rules of the language evolve.

In solitude and in the presence of others, children engage in this learning. More and more conventional writing appears. We are so blessed to honor this joyful play with the written word and to honor each child where they are in this beautiful process of writing!
