How can we use these tools with clay?

Last week, we presented the children with a collection of handmade tools. In small groups we invited them to examine the objects and choose one to draw from observation. We wondered together, WHAT COULD THEY BE? WHAT ARE THEY FOR?

"It looks like it's Chinese patterns or something people made." Sevi

"This is a comb to help brush." Beatrice

"This makes circles and diamonds." Ray

"Push down in it and make a clay U. Cuz it looks like a U." Chester

This week we presented these tools alongside clay in our mini-studio.
We posed a new research question.

Manipulating the tools with their hands and carefully observing with their eyes, the group has begun to experiment. Both teachers and children began to document the group's learning with the camera.
