“These can be shadows”

With our days beginning to grow shorter we appreciate more the magic of light.  This week we introduced a new way to know light into the classroom. Introducing some old technology with the use of an overhead projector we provoked a way to use light as a material.  While our intention was to bring connection with the children’s interest in leaves, we first focussed our attention on the children’s delight and fascination exploring this new machine and play with light and shadows.

“These can be shadows!” -Caroline

“There’s a screen!” -Rosalie

“Yeah, a screen!  That’s the light that helps you know what your making.  Look Rosalie, it’s up there!” -Charlie N.

“I’m scared of the light!” -Julia

“They make beautiful shadows.  Shadows make shadows.  Just because.  Another shadow…the other shadow makes another shadow.” -Louis

Travers and Wes create an imaginary story using the transparent leaves and sticks.

“Then the tree fell down and crashed right?” -Travers

As they narrate their story, sticks fall and pile on top of each other creating a tangled forest ravaged by a powerful storm.

Charlotte notes the reflection of the work she and Ian are creating above on the projector’s objective lens,

“Look!  Look down here!” -Charlotte

As Charlotte does, Miles notes the reflection of their work of piling leaves and sticks onto the projector’s table top,

“Look Charlie, look here!  Look how tiny they are!” -Miles
