Playing with Shapes

We invite you to read the story Mouse Shapes with us. After the story, please join us in exploring several shapes with paper and/or blocks. We are curious what you might create at home!

The mice in the story used shapes to create a house, a fish, and even a cat!

What can you create when you play with shape in different ways?

Have a grown-up help you to gather some paper. If you use white paper, you can then color your shapes with crayons, markers or whatever you have at home. Or you could use paper that is already colorful. Cut out your shapes. You may print out the shapes below and use these to trace if you'd like. Older children may want to use many shapes in their creations. Younger children may want to use only 3-4 different shapes.

Can you make something else with your shapes?

Maybe a vehicle, your favorite animal or some food you like to eat...

Or, you could try creating with block shapes...

Can you now make your picture out of blocks?

What else could you create using the block shapes?

We'd love to hear about your shape creations. You could take or draw a picture of what you have made and send it in for us to post!
