Studio Red: week 20

Dear Studio Red,

We have just begun to think about flags.  Where do you find flags?

PARTS OF OUR WEEK

INDOOR EXPLORE

How can you create a flag?

It all began with Kaya’s question, “Is this the American flag, red, blue and white?” and the opening of a book.  “Oh, I can make any flag!”  Kaya then grabbed a stencil and traced a rectangle.  He began with an “easier” flag.  “I did this one, cuz it’s easier.” He chose a flag containing only 2 blocks of color.  Soon many at the table were following Kaya’s lead.

We teachers notice that :

the abundance, color and shape of flags is compelling.

the joy and success of another is inspiring.

meaning, purpose and connection are visible to the children.

the work can be self-challenging.

BOOKS

Sitting in a big circle, we took turns as storytellers reading the Lion and the Mouse aloud.

We read Thyra Heder's book, Alfie. Just like so many in Studio Red, she told a story that mixed truth and fantasy. Like many authors, Thyra Heder invites us to wonder, where do our story ideas come from?

A story that follows a pattern is compelling and invites young readers to get to know the tale really well.  Mushroom in the Rain encourages children to retell the tale and practice storytelling language.

REFLECTION MEETING

We have been exploring visual webs as a way to connect and grow our ideas.  Since we have noticed so many acted out stories of kitties during outdoor play, we invited the group to share their story ideas all together.

What do we know about cats? What story ideas do we play?

What do we know about flags?

We revisited this tool to share our ideas about flags.

GREETINGS & GAMES

This week we remembered and practiced a passing greeting Mark taught us last Friday.

HOW DID WE CLAP A GREETING AROUND OUR CIRCLE?
